Bias. What to Know Before the Lesson. The Greeks invented bowling a long time ago; however, the bowling balls they used were often lopsided because they had to be made by hand. When a ball wouldn’t roll straight and would swerve to the right or left, they would say the ball was “biased.”.

  2. What to Know Before the Lesson • The Greeks invented bowling a long time ago; however, the bowling balls they used were often lopsided because they had to be made by hand. When a ball wouldn’t roll straight and would swerve to the right or left, they would say the ball was “biased.”

  3. Most Important Thing to Know • Bias means that you like or dislike something because you are part of a group.

  4. Examples of Biased Statements “The Dodgers will always be the best team ever!” -Yasiel Puig “Mr. Leos is the most handsome guy ever!” -Mrs. Leos • Bias is important because it can determine the value of information provided!

  5. Ways Publishers Demonstrate Bias Leave stuff out and focus only on the good or bad. Ex: Alcohol can make the good times even better. Placing ideas in more prominent areas. Ex: “I want people to know what a jerk Obama is, so I place an article about his smoking addiction.” Using photos wisely. Ex: Using the camera to catch an image that will make people feel the way you want them to feel.

If you had to convince someone to move to California, what two things would you tell them? If you had to convince someone to move to California, what would you leave out? If you wanted to scare a child into not talking to strangers, how would you say it? Look at the Kindle advertisement. How does the image show a bias towards reading? What does the advertisement leave out about their product? Look at the Drumstick advertisement. How does this ad show a bias towards their product? What do they leave out about their product?
