About Open-Court Reading… • Reads fine literature that express a particular theme • Learn different themes through reading various types of genres for his or her grade level • Relies on the No Child Left Behind Act • Uses the McGraw Hill text
About Open-Court Reading • Key Component: • “Early, explicit instruction in phonemic awareness and decoding is the key to reading success.” • Early means starting reading instruction in Kindergarten or, even better, in pre-school. • Explicit means teaching specific skills – not leaving it up to kids to "discover" how to read, or, all too often, not read, on their own. • Systematic is a research-based plan for teaching kids how to read that builds on previously learned skills. • Phonemic awareness is being able to distinguish the different sounds in a word. • Decoding is sounding out a word and attaching meaning to the word-real reading.
Statistics • A recent analysis of standardized test scores provided clear evidence that schools using SRA/Open Court Reading materials achieved higher test score gains than schools using other reading materials • Based on a study of more than 700 schools, Open Court schools show higher gain score than non-Open Court Schools.
Statistics • Open Court schools had higher gain scores statewide in California! • Statewide, the gain scores for total reading were: • 2nd Grade- 12.5% • 3rd Grade- 9.3%
Statistics • Open Court provided the largest gain scores for schools with high concentrations of both LEP (Limited English Proficient) and Low-SES (Socio-Economic Status) students
