  4. Clara Barton • Established the American Red Cross after Civil War • Dorothea Dix • Nurse for the Union Army • In charge of hospitals, nurses, supplies

  5. Mary Mahoney • First African-American RN • Led the awareness of cultural/ethnic diversity • 1901 • Nursing education moved into colleges, offered degree instead of just diploma • 1920-1930s • Nurse Midwife and CNS education programs established • Also ANA Code of Ethics for nurses

  6. 1950s • Graduate level nursing courses • 1965 Nurse Practitioner Role • Developed out of healthcare needs of children • Pediatric NP program established by Loretta Ford and Henry Silverman

  8. Nurse Practice Acts • Each state has specific regulations (laws) to obtain and keep a license • Amount of school • Background checks • Rules about behavior • Regular renewal periods • CEU requirements

  9. LPN Candidates must pass the NCLEX-PN • RN candidates must pass the NCLEX-RN • Both RNs and LPNs must • Abide by rules set forth by the state • Practice within the scope of practice identified by the state

  11. LPN Education • At least one year of formal nursing education • Clinical training included in education

  12. RN Education • Combines general college classes with nursing education • 2 year college or university = ADN • 4 year college or university = BSN • ADN + 2 more years of college classes
