ENTRANCE TO TERTIARY INSTITUTIONS • As from 1 January 2008 the Senior Certificate had been replaced by the National Senior Certificate (NSC) • Matriculation exemption is no longer applicable for entrance to tertiary institutions and had been replaced by a different set of admission requirements • M-score calculations are no longer applicable for admission to any programme at an Institution of Higher Education. The m-score had been replaced by the admission point score (APS) which is calculated in very much the same way
THE NATIONAL SENIOR CERTIFICATE (NSC) • The National Senior Certificate is a 130-credit certificate which is rated at level 4 by the national qualification framework (NQF) • 6 x 20-credit subject 120 credits • 1 x 10-credit subject (Life Orientation) _10 credits • Total 130 credits • To obtain entrance to an Institution of Higher Education, Higher Education South Africa (HESA) requires a NSC where the learner offers at least seven subjects: • - FOUR COMPULSORY SUBJECTS: • Home Language • First Additional Language • Mathematics OR Mathematical Literacy • Life Orientation • - THREE CHOICE SUBJECTS FROM THE APPROVED • SUBJECT LIST (20-CREDIT SUBJECTS)
UNIVERSITY ENTRANCE • To obtain university entrance for degree purposes HESA requires a NSC with an achievement rating of at least 4 (50-59%) in four recognized NSC 20-credit subjects from the designated subject list. • DESIGNATED SUBJECT LIST • AccountingAgricultural Science • Business Studies (previously Business Economics) Economics • Consumer Studies (previously Home Economics) History • Dramatic ArtsLanguages • Visual Arts Mathematical Literacy • GeographyMathematics • Information TechnologyReligion Studies • Life Sciences (previously Biology)Music • Physical Science (previously Natural Sciences) • Engineering Graphics and Design (previously Technical Drawing) • PLEASE NOTE THAT LIFE ORIENTATION IS THE ONLY 10 CREDIT SUBJECT. • EACH UNIVERSITY MAY SET THEIR OWN FACULTY SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS.
CALCULATION OF THE ADMISSION POINT SCORE (APS) • The calculation of an admission point score (APS) is based on a candidate’s achievement in six recognized 20-credit subjects (ALSO NSC RECOGNIZED 20-CREDIT SUBJECTS WHICH DO NOT APPEAR ON THE DESIGNATED LIST) • Take note that Life Orientation is excluded when the APS is calculated because it is a 10-credit subject. Although Life Orientation is no longer a specific subject requirement for admission to our study programmes, we highly value the subject and support the minimum achievement level required by the national Department of Education to obtain a NSC certificate. • The calculation of the APS is done on a seven point rating scale:

APPLICATIONPROCEDURES HOW TO APPLY • Complete application form and submit to the Client Service Centre (CSC) • Only original forms accepted (barcode) • Only ONE application form per student • Apply online at www.up.ac.za (Payment of application fee only by credit card) WHEN TO APPLY • As soon as possible after 1 March of each year • Closing date for most courses 30 September (International students 31 August) • Closing date for selection courses by 30 June (Residence) • Bursaries – 31 October
APPLICATION CHOICE OF DEGREE COURSES • A first and second study choice are offered on the application form • Two selection courses cannot be indicated as first and second choice • Students will only be admitted to one study programme DOCUMENTS TO SUBMIT WITH APPLICATION • Grade 11 end of year school report (No Grade 12 marks) • Copy of ID (Birth Certificate) • Application fee of R200 • Full or Foreign Conditional Exemption Certificate issued by HESA in case of International students
