Estimates for India –World’s CAD Capital • Number of cases • 2000- 27 million • 2015- 61 million • CVD related death: WHO (2002) • By 2020- CVDs will be the largest cause of death & disability in India • 1990 – 1.17 million; 2010 – 2.03 million; 2020 - 2.6 million (54.1 % of all CVD deaths) • Nearly 50% likely to occur in young and middle aged individuals (30-69 years) • CHD in Indians has been shown to occur prematurely (1- 2 decades earlier) • Global Burden of Disease (GBD) study estimates that 52% of CVD deaths occur below the age of 70 years in India as compared to 23% in developed countries. • Causes • Population growth • 683.2 million in 1981 – b/w 1253.8 and 1480.5 million in 2021 • Ageing population - proportion of adults > 35 years will rise from 28.4% of the population to 42.4%. • Increase in risk factors – lifestyle, work related, diabetes (51 million in 2009)

  5. Pool of Diseases that are loco-regionally more prevalent than other countries • Rheumatic heart disease (1/2 to 1/3 of all hospital admissions) • Certain cardiomyopathies (EMF, iron overload) • Non-specific aorto-arteritis • Adult congenitalHeart Disease (operated and un-operated)

CMR Acq Isch Cardiac Imaging in India • Large number of cardiac capable CT and MRs, but underutilized • Lack of awareness, lack of training, financial reasons • Most centers provide outsourced (stand-alone) services • Slow development of subspecialized imaging care • Huge load and wide spectrum of diseases, but limited interest in research • Low institutional base, limited research grants and also underutilized
