  3. Complex Transitions • Separate speakers or ideas • Separate direct quotes from the same speaker • Are complete sentences that can stand alone without quote • Chris Sigurdson, assistant vice president of external relations, said none of the funding for any of these buildings will come from student tuition. • Never use attribution as a transitional device • When asked, So and so said, "here is quote.“ • Don't repeat the quote • Howard Byers, evening general supervisor of building services, thinks this is the first time this has ever happened. • "I don't know that that's ever happened to anybody," he said.

  4. Bad: Jay Gephart, the director of the Symphony Orchestra, said he built the theme for this concert by first deciding to perform Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," then selecting other dance-centered music to fit with "The Nutcracker.“ • "Sometimes dance is a distraction to the music and we don't listen carefully; this gives people the opportunity to really dig in to the music and hear all the color," he said. • Kathy Matter, the public relations officer for Purdue Bands, agreed with Gephart. • "During a full production with scenery and dancing, music is just one element of the whole extravaganza," she said. "Many people really love this music and even have parts memorized. People can come to this concert and enjoy it for just the music."

  5. Instead: Jay Gephart, the director of the Symphony Orchestra, said he built the theme for this concert by first deciding to perform Tchaikovsky's "Nutcracker Suite," then selecting other dance-centered music to fit with "The Nutcracker." • "Sometimes dance is a distraction to the music and we don't listen carefully; this gives people the opportunity to really dig in to the music and hear all the color," he said. • Kathy Matter, the public relations officer for Purdue Bands, said during a full production with scenery and dance, music is often just one element vying for attention. • "Many people really love this music and even have parts memorized," she said. " People can come to this concert and enjoy it for just the music."

  6. Bad: When informed of Hatton and Jacobson's decision to drop out of the race, the other presidential candidates were surprised. • Greg Canfield said he was displeased with their decision. • "I think it's an unfortunate way to have to drop out of the race because I'm a big believer in having a fair fight," Canfield said. • David Purpura echoed Canfield's sentiments. • "It is disappointing because Ryan and Jenny are both great people and are both very qualified candidates," Purpura said.

  7. Instead: When informed of Hatton and Jacobson's decision to drop out of the race, the other presidential candidates were surprised. • Greg Canfield said voters benefit from a crowded field because the candidates are forced to work harder. • "I think it's an unfortunate way to have to drop out of the race because I'm a big believer in having a fair fight," Canfield said. • David Purpura said Hatton would have given voters another strong choice. • "For him to have to drop out, especially in his senior year, is really disappointing because he is tremendously qualified and has held numerous leadership positions in the past," Purpura said.

  8. Bush said the nation would survive the Iraq war intact. • "We are a strong nation,” he said. “Whether you agree or disagree, we will pull together and come out of this as one nation." • Bush said the current attention being given to foreign affairs would not distract him from problems that need attention at home, including the failing social security system. • "The elderly need assurances that Social Security will be there for them," he said. "We will continue our efforts to privatize the system to ensure its continued success and institute more efficiency and profitably."
