INTRODUCTION MY NAME IS OFC. TRAVIS LEWIS AND I AM A CLAYTON COUNTY POLICE OFFICER. I HAVE BEEN EMPLOYED AS A POLICE OFFICER FOR THREE YEARS. FOR THE LAST FIVE MONTHS I HAVE BEEN WITH THE SRO UNIT. PRIOR TO BECOMING A POLICE OFFICER I SPENT TIME AS A CORRECTIONAL OFFICER AND IN THE U.S. ARMY NATIONAL GUARD. I DID PARTICIPATE IN OPERATION IRAQI FREEDOM III, WHICH REQUIRED ME TO SPEND ONE YEAR IN IRAQ. I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN VIRGINIA. I SPENT THE FIRST SEVENTEEN YEARS OF MY LIFE IN CLARKSVILL, VA. I THEN RELOCATED TO ATLANTA GA. WHERE I STILL RESIDE. I AM MARRIED WITH TWO BEAUTIFUL CHILDREN. TODAY WE ARE GOING TO TALK ABOUT THE UNFORTUNATE TOPIC OF ILLEGAL DRUGS AND THE EFFECTS OF USING THEM. WE ARE GOING TO SPEAK ON THE TRAGIC ASSOCIATION THAT HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS HAVE WITH ILLEGAL DRUGS. MOST IMPORTANTLY, WHAT CAN WE DO TO AVOID INTERACTION WITH ILLEGAL DRUGS.
WHAT IS A DRUG? • CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE – DRUGS WHOSE GENERAL AVAILABILITY IS RESTRICTED; ANY ONE OF A NUMBER OF DRUGS OR OTHER SUBSTANCES WHICH ARE STRICTLY REGULATER OF OUTLAWED BECAUSE OF THEIR POTENTIAL FOR ABUSE OR ADDICTION. • DRUGS ARE CATEGORIZED BY SCHEDULES. THERE ARE FIVE DIFFERENT SCHEDULE DRUG LEVELS. - SCHEDULE I HAS A HIGH POTENTIAL OF ABUSE AND HAS NO MEDICAL PURPOSE IN THE U.S. - SCHEDULE II HAS A HIGH POTENTIAL OF ABUSE AND HAS A MEDICAL PURPOSE IN THE U.S. - SCHEDULE III-V HAS MEDIUM TO LOW POTENTIAL OF ABUSE, HAS A MEDICAL PURPOSE, AND MAINLY CONSISTS OF PRESCRIPTION DRUGS.
WHAT IS A DRUG CONT. • WHY DO PEOPLE USE DRUGS? - BOREDOM - TO FIT IN OR PEER PRESSURE - EXPERIMENTING - DEPRESSION - WEAKNESS • 16-13-30. POSSESSION, MANUFACTURING, ETC. OF CERTAIN CONTROLLED SUBSTANCES. - EXCEPT BY AUTHORIZED BY THIS ARTICLE, IT IS UNLAWFUL FOR ANY PERSON TO PURCHASE, POSSESS, OR HAVE UNDER HIS CONTROL ANY CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE.
DIFFERENT TYPES OF DRUGSMARIJUANA • DRIED, SHREDDED, FLOWERS, STEMS, AND LEAVES FROM THE HEMP PLANT CANNIBIS. • THC MAIN CHEMICAL • MOST COMMONLY USED ILLICIT DRUG IN THE U.S. • MOST COMMONLY SMOKED AS A CIGARETTE

COCAINE • ACTS AS A STIMULANT OF THE CENTRAL NERVOUSE SYSTEM AND AN APPETITE SUPPRESSANT. • CAN BE SNORTED, INJECTED, OR INGESTED • HIGHLY ADDICTIVE • OBTAINED FROM COCA PLANT
CRACK • A SOLID FORM OF COCAINE FOR SMOKING • FREEBASE FORM, WHICH IS MADE FROM COCAINE AND BAKING SODA. BAKING SODA AND COCAINE IS MIXED TOGETHER IN A WATER SOLUTION AND THEN HARDENED

SCHOOL AND DRUGS ACCORDING TO THE BUREAU OF JUSTICE STATISTICS AT THE END OF YEAR 2007 THE FOLLOWING PERCENTAGE OF STUDENTS STATED THAT THEY USED THE FOLLOWING DRUGS • MARIJUANA – 83.9% • COCAINE - 47.1% • CRACK - 37.5% • METH. - 25.1% • HEROIN - 29.7%
AVOIDING DRUGS • DO NOT ASSOCIATE ONESELF WITH ANYONE WHO PARTICIPATES IN ILLEGAL DRUG ACTIVITY. • SPORTS – BASKETBALL, FOOTBALL, WEIGHTLIFTING, ETC. • FAMILY ACTIVITIES - CHURCH, MOVIES, SHOPPING, COOK OUTS, ETC.
CONCLUSION A NEGATIVE OUTCOME IS ALL THAT WILL RESULT FROM A NEGATIVE SITUATION. USING A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE CAN BE A HARD LESSON LEARNED. THERE ARE MANY DRUGS, MILLIONS OF PEOPLE, AND THOUSANDS OF EXCUSES WHEN IT COMES TO DRUG USAGE. AN ILLEGAL DRUG AND A WEAK MINDED PERSON COULD GENERATE ANOTHER STATISTIC FOR MY NEXT PRESENTATION. I CAN THINK OF MANY DIFFERENT THINGS TO DO OTHER THAN INVOLVING MYSELF WITH A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE WHICH WILL JEOPARDIZE MY HEALTH AND FREEDOM. I HOPE YOU CAN TOO.
