When reviewing colonial finances, Grenville made the alarming discovery that the American customs service was costing eight thousand pounds a year and bringing in only two thousand pounds • A lot of smuggling was going on
View of Great Britain • Great Britain placed these taxes on the colonies • The British also hoped that the act would force colonists to sell their goods to Britain as opposed to selling to other countries • They did this because they needed to earn money back after the French-Canadian war • They started taxing them for their own protection
View of the Colonies • The sugar act alarmed many colonials • The people in the colonies were worried that Britain would start making them spend more and more money for their goods through taxes • Now instead of dealing with understanding colonists, violators would have to deal with unfriendly judges from Great Britain
Result • Some leaders in the colonies started to boycott British goods • They told everybody to boycott them as well, so the British would make the prices lower • The colonists became more united because they opposed the Sugar Act
