  1. Genealogy of ChristAbraham Genesis 12:1-3 Romans 5:13-18

  2. Between Adam and Abraham • 18 Generations • Seth (Substitute) • Enoch (Walked with God) • Methuselah (Oldest person ever) • Noah (Preservation of man) • Shem (Second son of Noah) • Terah (Father of Abraham)

  3. Old Testament Covenants • Adamic Covenant: Don’t eat from tree of knowledge of good and evil and you can stay in garden forever. • Noahic Covenant: Never again destroy creation with a flood • Abrahamic Covenant: Promise of descendants and blessing • Mosaic Covenant: God gave man the Law • Davidic Covenant: David's line established forever • The Future Covenant: Messiah

  4. Abrahamic Covenant • Genesis 12:1-3 The LORD had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household to the land I will show you.  2 “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.” • 1. Promise of land • 2. Promise of descendants • 3. Promise of blessing and redemption

  5. The Promise Fulfilled Romans 4:13-18 It was not through the law that Abraham and his offspring received the promise that he would be heir of the world, but through the righteousness that comes by faith. For if those who depend on the law are heirs, faith means nothing and the promise is worthless, because the law brings wrath. And where there is no law there is no transgression. Therefore, the promise comes by faith, so that it may be by grace and may be guaranteed to all Abraham’s offspring—not only to those who are of the law but also to those who have the faith of Abraham. He is the father of us all. As it is written: “I have made you a father of many nations.” He is our father in the sight of God, in whom he believed—the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not. Against all hope, Abraham in hope believed and so became the father of many nations, just as it had been said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”

  6. Who is the Promise for? • Jews: • 2 Corinthians 3:14-18 – The Jews eyes are veiled from the truth of salvation • Romans 11:25-28 – The Jews will be saved through the promise, the veil will one day be lifted • Gentiles: • Romans 9:6-8 – The children of Abraham are not through blood, but through faith • Galatians 3:14 – Salvation through the promise of Abraham is for the Gentiles

  7. The Promise of Salvation Fulfilled Acts 3:24-26 “Indeed, beginning with Samuel, all the prophets who have spoken have foretold these days. And you are heirs of the prophets and of the covenant God made with your fathers. He said to Abraham, ‘Through your offspring all peoples on earth will be blessed.’ When God raised up his servant, he sent him first to you to bless you by turning each of you from your wicked ways.”

  8. Pilgrims Progress • “What a fool am I, thus to lie in a stinking dungeon, when I may as well walk in liberty! I have a key in my bosom called Promise, that I am sure, open any lock in a doubting castle.” • Abraham was a wondering pilgrim that held onto a promise. • You and I have that same promise, we are called to be pilgrims (journeyers in a foreign land), but hold to the promise of God.

  9. Promises, Promises • The best way to keep one’s word is not to give it. Napoleon Bonaparte • God is not like man, his promises always hold true. His promise to Abraham and to us is for the salvation given through the sacrifice of Christ.
