DNA – September 14, 2010 • What should you do if you missed school on a non-test day? • What should you do if you come to class tardy, even if it was because you were in the clinic? • Describe the proper way to complete your DNA.
If You Have A Question • Raise your hand and wait for me to call on you or come to you. • Be patient! Do not shout out to get my attention. There is only 1 of me and 28 of you. I do my best to help everyone. • If you see that I am busy, you may ask someone next to you quietly. Do NOT get up to do this.
Answering Questions • Raise your hand and wait to be called on. • Do NOT shout out answers. • If I call on you (even if you didn’t raise your hand), you MUST answer the question. • There is a NO OPT OUT policy. Pay attention. This will affect your grade. • I will make sure that you can answer the question even if that means I ask somebody else for the answer and you repeat it.
What Can We Do? • Set goals for ourselves and work hard to reach them! • Ambitious, but feasible • Class BIG Goals: • 80% Content Mastery • 80% Lab Skills Mastery • 3 Pts Growth on the ACT
Last Year… • 2 classes hit over 80% content mastery, while the other 3 classes were in the high 70s • All classes reached 80% lab skills mastery!! • We averaged 2.6 points of growth on the ACT • 1 student went up by 8 points! How do you think those students were able to accomplish this?
On The Back of Your DNA Paper • Tell me: • 2 individual big goals for yourself • How you plan to accomplish these goals • Be specific
What is Scientific Inquiry? • SI is a process by which we conduct an investigation in order to obtain knowledge • Always starts with a question derived from observation of the world
Why Study Scientific Inquiry? • Scientific inquiry helps us develop many skills: • Observing • Inferring • Predicting • Classifying • Measuring • Interpreting • Analyzing
Why Study Scientific Inquiry? • Inquiry skills combined with critical thinking and current scientific knowledge help us discover new scientific knowledge • This is how we know more and more about our surroundings as time goes on • Start with a question, run an investigation, make conclusions • Question based on experience • Research methods based on that question
General Steps of Scientific Inquiry • Purpose Question • Research Questions/Background Information • Hypothesis • Materials • Procedures • Data • Analysis • Conclusion
On Your Handout • Work in groups • Describe the 8 steps of Scientific Inquiry in as much detail as you can
