  2. Question • Have you ever done something really strange and didn’t realize how bizarre it was until you were already doing it?

Summary • Takes place in an undisclosed location in a busy market • Young girl impulsively sneaks into store front window and poses as the mannequin • Wills herself to stay still in the store front window all day while people stop to admire her • At the end of the day a man notices her and she sneaks out of the store putting the mannequin back in place walking away feeling confident

  4. Author’s Use of Language • Imagery: • “Her tense body gradually became unstrung, and an unprovoked smile came to her lips. She quite liked it – standing with one foot slightly forward, the hem of her sari going over her head and then dropping down to wrap itself around the joint of her right elbow. She looked positively ravishing” (Khan 98). • Rhetorical Question: • After the character assumes the mannequin’s position; “Why did she do it?” (Khan 98). • Suspense: • “She was still congratulating herself on her firmness when she caught sight of a cop who had just separated from the crowd…The moment he saw her his hand stopped dead, his mouth fell open, and his eyes widened” (Khan 99).

  5. Conflict Person vs. Society • “She was happy. Incredibly happy. No one had looked at her so appreciatively before. At least not in her presence” (Khan 99). • “All the same, she also knew that she was safe inside the show window. Where would she find such protection outside?” (Khan 100). • “What if he saw the family’s honour exposed so shamelessly out on the street? Wouldn’t he drop dead” (Khan 100).

  6. Conflict Person vs. Self • “Rather, it pleased her to think that she was now a full participant in the teeming life around her. It was a strange feeling. She had never experienced it before” (Khan 99). • “Confidently she strode away, briskly but lightly, happy and satisfied. As though she’d just unloaded the entire pestering weight of her body and soul” (Khan 101). • Was it resolved?

  7. Themes • Going against traditional ways • Always covered up but by doing this she is open • “What if he saw the family’s honour exposed so shamelessly out on the street? Wouldn’t he drop dead?” (Khan 100). • Struggle between family honour and college student ways • The pedestrians paid more attention to her as a mannequin than a real human being – finally wanted • “She never felt herself a part of the life around her – the buoyant, strident life, full of vigour and excitement” (Khan 98). • “Rather, it pleased her to think that she was now a full participant in the teeming life around her. It was a strange feeling. She had never experienced it before” (Khan 99).
