  3. WHY NOT ANNEX TEXAS? The U.S. was hesitant to annex Texas because… • they did not want to anger Mexico. • Texas had too high of a debt. • Texas was a slave state.

  4. NATIVE AMERICANS CONFLICT WITH TEXANS • Why do you think the Native Americans did NOT like the Anglo American settlers? • (answers will vary) President Houston called in the Texas Rangers to protect the interests of the Native Americans.

MIRABEAU LAMAR’S POLICIES • Texas Annexation • against annexation • wanted Texas to become a great nation • Education • wanted to improve education • felt the citizens should be educated to make informed decisions • Native Americans • believed the Native Americans had no claim to the land in Texas

  8. LAMAR SPENDS MONEY • Indian wars cost nearly $2.5 million • reorganization of the navy • purchased several ships • the navy was kept on active duty Debt at the end of Lamar’s term: $7 million

  10. The Battle The Texans attacked the town expecting an easy victory. After 2 days of fighting, the Texans surrendered. The Texans were marched to Mexico City.
