Common Core Mathematical Practices Creating centers to meet the needs of EA students Libby Schwaegler
What are the CCMP? • Practices that all math teachers should use in the classroom • Some would argue- “Just plain good teaching” • NCTM Process Standards • National Research Council’s report Adding it Up
Stop Complaining– Start Cultivating! • It IS intimidating to face new standards • Meant to make things better– not more complicated • Testing will be hard– get over it! • Textbooks will change– so what? • Work towards making every student mathematically proficient– isn’t that already your job?
Are we still doing centers? • Create learning experiences through mandated practices • Make centers something you can live with • No one said it has to be “fun and games” all the time • Want to do projects instead? Spin it!
Adjusting what we do • 5 or more CCMP in each center you create • Stop creating centers that are boring for you and them • Create authentic problems– students see through “real-world” • Carry centers over • Create different levels of the same center
PBLs in Centers • Choose 3 PBLs • Break each into the same number of processes • Different kids– Different PBL
Leveling Centers Not difficulty level– Processing level • Example- Sideway Arithmetic from Wayside School (I have images and concrete copies at school) • Level 1= Chapter 1 • If they like it they do it again next time
Resources • Common Core Standards • There’s an App for that! • NASA Connect or NASA Exploring Through Space • Figure This! • The Futures Channel • Monthly Budget Project
