    1. Division of Medical Imaging Department of Nuclear Medicine Women’s and Children’s Hospital D.M.S.A. RENAL SCAN D.M.S.A. Renal Scan A D.M.S.A. renal scan detects scarring of the kidneys, locates ectopic renal tissue and provides an accurate differential renal function. Procedure The test requires an injection of a small amount of radioactive material into a vein. This solution is delivered to the kidneys via the bloodstream. After the injection, there is a delay of 90 minutes before the images are taken. This delay is necessary to allow the injected solution time to concentrate in the kidneys. The patient is required to keep very still for the images. We therefore have different preparation requirements for different age groups. The images usually takes about 45 minutes to complete. Images The injection contains small quantities of a radioactive material that emits gamma rays which are detected by the camera. The camera and the computer convert these rays to images of the kidneys. Left & Right Kidneys Magnified View of Left Kidney Side Effects Side effects are very rare (1:1000 patients may have a rash) and most of the injected radioactivity will be cleared from the body within 24 hours. Patient Preparation EMLA cream – a local anaesthetic cream is recommended for all children over 6 months of age. The EMLA cream will numb the skin prior to giving the injection. Children aged over 3 years: Please attend the department 1 hour prior to your injection time to have the EMLA cream applied. Eat and drink as normal. Children aged 6 months to 3 years : Please attend the department 1 hour prior to your injection time to have the EMLA cream applied. Children in this age group will require oral sedation for the pictures to be acquired. For sedation to be administered safely, your child must be fasted properly. Children between 6 months and 3 years of age MUST FAST from solids (including milk/formula) for 5 hours prior to the injection time and fast from clear fluids for 1 hour prior to the injection time. For example: Injection time : 9:30 am 10:30 am EMLA time : 8:30 am 9:30 am Fast from solids from 4:30 am 5:30 am Fast from clear fluids from 8:30 am 9:30 am Children aged under 6 months: EMLA cream is not recommended for children under 6 months of age Babies need to fast completely for 3 hours prior to their injection time. For example: Injection time : 9:30 am 10:30 am Fast from : 6:30 am 7:30 am Results The test results will be sent to your referring doctor within a day of completion. Location The Nuclear Medicine department is located on Level 2, Rogerson Building in the Division of Medical Imaging. For further information please ask the Nuclear Medicine Technologist performing the scan or phone Nuclear Medicine on 8161 6020.
