Signal processing in high quality VC-environments • 03.11.2010, Signal processing seminar • University of Vaasa, Department of Technology • Matti Tyynelä ( MSc), maty@uwasa.fi
What to expect today • Definition: what is a high quality vidcon • Some practical examples of use of high quality VC-systems • Some signal processing challenges with practical examples • Introduction to Access Grid VCE • Conclutions: IT IS A WONDER (that this shit actually works)
What is high quality Video Conferencing environment • IT IS NOT: standard H263 -standard based, hardware connected systems (such as Tandberg, Polycom etc.) • Skype, Marratech, GoogleVID, Adobe ConnectPRO -type -PC and Browser based video GroupWares • IT PROVIDES: Use of unlimited amount of HQ-videocams in every node, Use of unlimited amount of microphones in every node and individual calibration for every one of mics and cams. • It REQUIRES a lot of learning, patience and bandwith in every node and a gird of root and mirror server systems
Some practical examples of use • University of Vaasa, Seinäjoki Unit and Sibelius Academy: Distance teaching in Rythm Music institute : • Guitar sessions • University of Vaasa Seinäjoki Unit and Music academy of Etelä-Pohjanmaa: • Rock lyrics workshop video • VIRMU Project (virtual music teaching) • A project based example
Some signal processing challenges • SYNChronization of video signal and voice signal: essential for distance music teaching - learning • LAG in voice signal: teacher and student play in same rythm: how to avoid rythm problems • FLOW problems in video signal: how to keep video running precisely but smoothly (example Orchestra leader training)
Introduction to Access Grid -VCE • Propably one of the most advanced systems in the Open Source world • Based on Computer Grid Technology • Root server system and mirrors all over • One mirror server was installed in Seinäjoki • THE BEST in voice quality: Use of unlimited amount of cameras, BUT: eats a lot of bandwith • Access Grid org homepage
Conclusions • In 2010, Bandwith almost everywhere is sufficient for maintain HQ Vidcom systems, with multi layer processors, mirror system or even stand alone server is not a big deal • IT IS WONDER that students of University of Vaasa don't have a virtual class room or project work walls or virtual living room with distance precense for international students • HQ vidcom systems could provide a lot of good practical exercise for Automation students in signal processing • New friendly University counterparts for Signal Processing tasks for University of Vaasa
