  2. Here are the terms we will look at today: • Protagonist vs Antagonist • Setting • Irony • Symbolism • Theme WRITE THESE TERMS DIRECTLY INTO YOUR SHORT STORY BOOKLETS!!!

  3. When it comes to the characters in a story, there is: a PROTAGONIST!  the main character. versus.... an ANTAGONIST!  the character (or force) in direct opposition to the protagonist. THE JOKER! BATMAN!

  4. The SETTING of a story is ... ... the time and place in which the story occurs. GOTHAM CITY, 2009 (?)

  6. You’ve seen the next one before... • SYMBOLISM! • Do you remember the definition....? • Symbolism is... ...when something concrete... ...stands for something abstract (an idea, feeling, etc.) GOOD! YOU REMEMBERED!  Example: -the colour green might symbolize greed, envy or innocence. -a ring could symbolize love, marriage, or eternity. -the wind could symbolize change. -a skull could symbolize death. *IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE CONTEXT!*

  7. Theme! • Theme: the author’s message – usually a generalization about life that is either stated or implied.
