  1. Challenges for teams in Neurorehabilitationand some strategies for failure and burn-out Conference “Complex neurorehabilitation as the basis for reintegration into society and the labor market” „NEUROPSYCHOLOGY and SENSORS“ Praha, 27. - 28.9.2013 Tobias Gräßer Clinical Neuropsychologist (GNP) Systemic Therapist (IGST) Bonn, Germany

  2. 5 Challenges for Teams in Rehabilitation (Prigatano, 1999) Daily Interaction with brain-damaged patients Opposition of patients and families against therapy and rehabilitation Limitations and restrictions of the health system (treatment duration, costs, documentation requirements) Conflicts with hospital management Unclear scientific evidence about effectiveness of rehabilitation

  3. Why strategies for failure ? Neurological diseases lead to highly individual functional symptoms and life changes. Frequently, even if neurological and neuropsychological assessment lead to relatively clear statements, there is not one single treatment strategy. Working in Neurorehabilitation often is associated with not knowing exactly what to do to treat a patient the best way possible.

  4. Why strategies for failure ? If knowing what to do is unclear, it can be helpful to know what to do not. The strategies for failure can give an orientation in that respect.

  5. Strategies for failure and burn-out in neurorehabilitation • Assume that rehabilitation, assessment and therapy is always useful. • Assume that there is a treatment for every symptom or a solution for every problem. • Assume that more information is always useful.

  6. Strategies for failure and burn-out in neurorehabilitation • Assume that the participation of partners or relatives of the patient in the therapy process is always helpful. • Assume that if a patient does not share your view of his/her situation this is due to a lack of awareness.

  7. Strategies for failure and burn-out in neurorehabilitation • Assume that awareness is a necessary prerequisite or requirement for therapy. • Do not ask the patient about his/her goals, it is sufficient if you know your own goals as a therapist or doctor. • Do not question the views and/or goals you defined in the beginning of rehabilitation.

  8. Strategies for failure and burn-out in neurorehabilitation • Be aware of the fact that you are dealing with severely impaired brain-damaged patients. Do not communicate with the patients as with normal adults. • Do not use team meetings to talk about your doubts, imperfection, helplessness in dealing with your patients.

  9. Strategies for failure and burn-out in neurorehabilitation • Make sure to fulfill every expectation of the patient or his family. • Take full 100% responsibility for the success of the rehabilitation.

  10. Strategies for failure and burn-out in neurorehabilitation Good Luck !
