Sonke Gender Justice: Mobilising Men for Gender Justice Dean Peacock Founder and Executive Director
Established in August 2006, with 100 women and men working together in South Africa, 20 African countries and across the world from Johannesburg, Cape Town, Gugulethu, and Bushbuckridge to promote gender justice, democracy and human rights.
Sonke recognises that social change requires multifaceted approach and employs five programme areas: • Community Education and Mobilisation • Policy Development and Advocacy • Communications • International Programmes • Organisational Development • Research and M&E
High levels of men’s violence against women, men and children, HIV and AIDS, and social and structural drivers, including inequality, unemployment, and some men’s resistance to change. But also enormous potential and tradition of activism, change and commitment to human rights, including in our constitution.
Sonke workshops a starting point for community mobilisation and activism, not an end-goal
