  2. What is Schizophrenia? • It is a mental disorder that affects the brain and the mind. • Schizophrenia means “split mind” in Greek. • This brain disorder makes you hallucinate, have bizarre behavior, disorganized speech, and delusions.

  3. Statistics • 2.4 million Americans and also 24 million people worldwide every year are affected by this brain disorder • About 10% of adults with schizophrenia will die by suicide • People with schizophrenia are driven to smoking and it may be hard to quit. The percentage of schizophrenics who smoke is 75% -90% compared to the other 25% -30% of the general population.

  4. Treatment • Medications are antipsychotic, antidepressant, and antianxiety. You must use a mixture of the medication at the same time. • Drug treatment is the primary therapy for schizophrenia.

  5. Tips For Managing The Illness • Ways of managing the illness are through the use of medication and through interventions. • Family members should also be around to give the person love and support while also trying to include them in things happening in society.

  6. Signs and Symptoms Delusions: These are beliefs that are not true, such as feeling people are following or trying to hurt them, believing other people can read their minds, or beliefs that they have special powers or abilities. Hallucinations: This usually takes the form of hearing voices that are not there, but people with schizophrenia may also see, smell, taste, and feel things that are not there. Bizarre behavior: This can be expressed in many different ways. In short, the individual behaves in ways that seem inappropriate or strange to other people. Disorganized speech: The individual speaks in ways that are hard to understand. For instance, sentences might not make sense, or topic of conversation changes with little or no connection between sentences. Sometimes speech is completely incomprehensible. "Negative symptoms": This includes lack of motivation or interest, diminished cognitive functioning, and decreased emotional expression. Individuals may lose interest in attending to their own personal hygiene, have little interest in interacting with others, and rarely seem to feel or express strong emotions.
