2. Requirements Compulsory as part of CIPD’s Applied Personnel and Development Field needed to achieve CIPD PDS standards - therefore PG Dip HRM students and MAESHRM students following CIPD route must complete the Learning Log
Compulsory element of the University’s Consultancy, Skills and Change (HRP045N) module for PG DIP HRM students
3. Continuing Professional Development (CPD) The CIPD requires that all its members practise CPD and keep a CPD record
To upgrade to Chartered Member of CIPD, a CPD record and development plan for a 2 year period is required (one year back, one year ahead). CIPD provides guidance on this
4. Learning Outcomes Learning outcomes follow CIPD’s People Management and Development Field
Requirement to record learning under ALL of these outcomes
Requirement to record learning from ALL 4 skills events/workshops (underpinning the People Management and Development Field)
Development plan required
5. Presentation Follow the template given; keep a copy yourself
Hand written or typed but must be presented in hard copy, NOT on disks, CD roms, etc
Additional evidence of learning e.g. appendices are NOT required
Entries can be short - what did I do, when did I do it, what key thing did I learn, how will I use that learning/development need
6. Example: Work in partnership with other stakeholders to help overcome blockages and barriers to change
7. Sources of learning Your course of study - lectures, seminars, reading, case studies, practical work
Your job - day to day activities, special projects, training courses, meetings
Your reading - newspapers, journals, books
Other activities - running clubs/societies, television programmes, etc
8. Frequently asked questions……? What if I can’t find anything to put under one of the headings? Set out to find out about the issue…. Read around the subject….Write up your learning (your course should cover all the learning outcomes!)
Can I use past experiences and previous learning? Yes….but it is important to put that learning into context today and how you might use it in the future
9. Frequently asked questions……? Can I use the same learning experience under more than one learning outcome? Yes ….but the commentary should be tailored to the learning outcome
How many entries do I have to put in? You need to demonstrate continuing professional development. Continuing implies more than one entry and over a period of time!
10. Frequently asked questions……? What if I have a lot of entries under one learning outcome (e.g. I do this in my job) but only a couple under another (I have little experience)? Not a problem as long as there is some learning demonstrated under each learning outcome.
How many entries do I need to cover the skills session requirements? One or two learning points from each should be fine.
11. Marking Competent/not competent (i.e. pass/fail). Students taking HRP045N must pass the log to pass the module
Address all learning outcomes and include all four skills events
Demonstrate continuing learning (i.e. more than one entry per learning outcome)
Include a detailed SMART development plan for the year ahead
Include 500 words of reflection on the dissertation or management research report
12. Submission of Learning Log PG Dip HRM students must submit their Learning Log with a cover sheet to post-graduate registry as part of module HRP045N (Consultancy, Skills and Change) by the date given by the Module Leader
MAESHRM students following the CIPD route submit their Log to the Post-graduate Office - there is no set deadline as the Log is not a Module assessment requirement. However, you are advised to submit this shortly after completion of your dissertation
