Course Description: Students will be introduced to the principles and functions of oral and non-verbal communication. The format will include lecture, discussion and performance.
Course Purposes: Students will be introduced to the study of communication at the intrapersonal and interpersonal levels. Students will participate in various graded and un-graded communication exercises designed to increase students’ communication competency in multiple context.
The goals of this class are to: • Help students recognize and control communication apprehension. • Introduce students to the critical thinking processes involved in topic selection, argument formation and arrangement, audience analysis, and speech research. • Grade students’ use of appropriate language, spelling, syntax, proper speech outline, and grammatical writing in various communication settings. • Increase students’ knowledge of speech communication as a discipline and its historical foundations. • Facilitate students’ understanding of how groups work and how to be a successful group member. • Enhance students’ nonverbal communication competence in interpersonal, group, and public speaking contexts. • Take extensive notes to facilitate all of the above.

Presentation Descriptions • Introductory Presentation: In this presentation you are introducing yourself to this audience. Choose information to share about yourself that will not embarrass you or your audience. • This can include generic information about your family, hobbies, likes, dislikes, education, vacations, taste in music, food, movies, books, etc. • Historical speech: For this speech, you will select a famous speech and present it to the class. • Class Opening: This presentation addresses the need to call a group of people to attention. The most important part of your opening will be to gain and focus the group on you and your topic. A group of people becomes an audience when someone gathers their attention. • Informative Speech: For this speech, you will become a keynote speaker for the event of your choice. • Persuasive Speech: This speech focuses on influencing an audience by presenting a prescribed sequence of information that taps into the beliefs, values, attitudes, and behaviors, of the audience, motivating them to perceive the topic your way.
Presentation Descriptions (cont.) • Teaching Project Presentation: The teaching project is a group endeavor that includes written and spoken components. You will be assigned a section of the textbook or other speech related materials. You will then teach the topic area to the rest of the class. There is a visual aide component to this presentation. • Special Occasion Speech: For this speech, you will choose from the following special occasions: birthday, funeral, graduation, or wedding. • Group Project: For this assignment, you will work in a group of three. Visual Aides will be required for this assignment. • Debate: For this assignment, you will be given a topic and a side for which to argue. You will research your given argument and present your side in a formal debate. • Interview: As part of your final exam, you will be engaged in a mock interview.
