Public Speaking: Speech Planning and Analysis
OBJECTIVES • Identify the four basic variables of speech planning and analysis • Use situation, purpose, audience, and method to analyze speeches • Use the terms to further understand speech preparation and delivery
Situation • The when and where a speech is given • time and place; • looking into what was happening before, during, after the speech; • the “history” leading up to the speech and the results that followed it; • contains the problem the speaker is addressing
Purpose • The speaker’s intent; • what he or she wants to accomplish with the audience; • the answer to the question: Why is this speech being given?
Audience • People intended to hear the speech and respond to it; • Sometimes there is an unintended audience
Method • Any of the choices a speaker makes to adapt the message to the audience • Includes word choice, gestures, organizational patterns; proof; quotations
Homework for tomorrow: • Bring in a “cool” print advertisement or write down the link for a commercial (so we can share it with the class).
SPAM ACTIVITY • Break into groups of 3-5 • Develop a short skit in which one character has to persuade the group members to do something • Plan the skit using the SPAM model • Following the skit, help the class understand the methods your character used
