A Life of a Traveller By Lisa Goolcharan. Feb. 6, 2014
My name is Lisa Goolcharan. I was born in Canada in 1985. I am the eldest child in my family. I have two brothers. Their names are Jon and Jeremy. They are very special to me. As a child, I loved skipping rope and cooking with my grandma. I was a dreamer. I would imagine what life would be like when I was older. In grade 6, I got the lead role in the school play. I was a clown who sang a beautiful solo. I am a writer and teacher who loves to share ideas. I like to write fiction and nonfiction. I am an extraordinary person!

I have four main accomplishments. First of all, I help many people. I am a caring teacher who tries to help students reach their goals. As a friend, I try to be helpful. Sometimes I give my friend advice or use my skills or contacts to help them. I try to give to charity or volunteer my time for important causes like environmental awareness and poverty. Secondly, when I was 15, I won the National Poetry Award. I was invited to go to a conference and read my poetry in Washington DC. After, when I was 21, I published my first piece of writing. The book was part of an outreach program to help parents and children. I felt so proud of the finished product. Lastly, I have travelled around the world learning about new people and places. I lived in Kuwait and Korea and travelled around Europe, Thailand, India and Kenya. I get to learn about the world by reading books and by experiencing it myself. I am proud of my accomplishments.
I have four main challenges. First of all, I am scared of insects especially cockroaches. In Kuwait I was not looking carefully and I picked up a large cockroach close to my eye. When I was in India, I was on a train with hundreds of cockroaches. I try to remain calm when I see one. Secondly, I am scared of heights. I don’t mind going in an airplane but I hate climbing up a ladder. One of my greatest challenges was money. I worked as a waitress to pay for my university education. I overcame that challenge and graduated with two degrees. Another challenge I faced is how I feel about myself. Sometimes I have low self confidence where I question my decisions and worry what other people think. At times I am shy to speak in front of others and wonder if I am good enough. I remind myself that everything will be okay and I am wonderful just the way I am. I try to overcome all my challenges.
My Influences
My grandma and my best friends in Canada are my greatest influences. My grandma was an educated, loving and playful woman. She believed in my talents and loved me to the moon and back again. She showed me the importance of family and helping others. I am a better person because of her. My best friends in Canada Alana, Chantal, Kellie and Roma are great influences in my life. They support and encourage me. They encouraged me to go to university and support me in my decisions. They understand and know who I am. My grandma and my best friends in Canada are important people to me.
