Digital Divide • Gender gap • Digital Divide: A statistical difference in access to computer technology between various demographic groups. • Gendered nature of Technology: Toffler (1990): “material-ismo” – the manufacture of goods as “male” or macho • NUA Internet Survey: Gender gap in Internet usage closed (30:70 in 1995  50:50 in 2000) • Does Internet usage mean the same thing to women and men?

Toward Digital Inclusion • 4th report in the falling through the Net series in 2000. • Households with Internet access: 26.2% in 1998 to 41.5% in 2000 (58% increase). • Households with computers: 42.1% in 1998 to 51. % in 2000 • People online: 84.6 million in 1998 to 116.5 million in 2000 • Individuals using the Internet: 32.7% in 1998 to 44.4% in 2000 (More than half of all American in 2001). • Groups that have traditionally been digital "have nots" are now making dramatic gains
