  3. What We Do Not Know? • What do the Historical Books contain? How the Chosen People conquered and settled the Promised Land. How the Chosen People desired a king. Babylonian Captivity & return Successful revolt against the Greeks

  4. What do the Books of Wisdom contain? The Book of Job The Psalms The Song of Songs

  5. What do the Prophetic Books contain? Powerful figures who spoke for Yahweh They warned people to remain faithful to the covenant or accept the consequences. The Book of Daniel is apocalyptic (symbolic).

  6. Different Ways Of Interpreting The New Testament 1. Scripture means whatever I think it means problems?? 2. Scripture is absolute, literal, historical truth never to be interpreted symbolically the fundamentalist approach problems??

  7. The Catholic Approach: • The bible should be read prayerfully & critically • What does critically mean? • Not negative – looking at bible in – • historical & literary contexts

  8. HISTORICAL CONTEXT – customs & ways of thinking & the conditions at the time bible was written • LITERARY CONTEXT – analyzes the writings themselves

  9. Some Important Questions • What religious, cultural, social, and religious issues influenced the writer? • For whom is the test being written? • What was the audience like? • What were its needs? • How did the writer help his audience understand the gospel?

  10. Source Criticism • Matthew’s Gospel - Where did he get his information? • What did he take from the oral tradition? • What written documents might he have used? • Did he use another gospel? • Matthew uses 80% of Mark’s verses • Luke uses 65% of Mark’s verses • SYNOPTIC
