Gold Rush • 1849 – a rush to California in order to find gold • Forty-niners – those who went to California in 1849 • Most from America, also the first large group of Asian immigrants • Sierra-Nevada – mountain range separating California from the rest of the United States • The Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo – all Californios became American citizens • The Land Law of 1851 – Californios had to prove the land was theirs (many lost) • Boomtowns – towns of people that rush into an area looking for wealth • The California Gold Rush more than doubled the world’s supply of gold • Merchants made the most money (no where else to buy) • Levi Strauss – made sturdy, denim mining pants • Vigilantes – those who take law into their own hands • California was changed – population soared, statehood applied

Religious Reforms • In Utah, Mormons were a small group of hard-working Americans who attended the Church of Latter-day Saints • Joseph Smith – founded the church in 1830 • An angel revealed new scriptures to help interpret the Bible • Property should be held in common, God called him to be a prophet, the church should be restored • Kicked out of New York State • In 1844, a mob killed Smith in Illinois • Brigham Young – took over as the head of the Mormons • Great Salt Lake – Young took the group to modern day Utah • 1846 – 12,000 Mormons go to Utah • The largest single migration in American history • Deseret – communities set up in the desert area • 1850 – President Millard Fillmore makes Brigham Young the governor of the Utah Territory
