Freshman Academy • Why a Freshman Academy? • Creates small learning communities where incoming 9th grade students are provided supports to ease transition from middle school to high school. • Promotes interpersonal skills, effective use of resources and a high degree of personal accountability and self-advocacy. • Provides a focused look at life after high school by planning and preparing for college and career.
Freshman Academy The mission of the HCS Freshman Academy is to ensure that 9th grade cohorts successfully graduate within four years with the necessary knowledge and skills to succeed in college and career. Goals Improve number of 9th grade students who matriculate to 10th grade by providing academic supports. Decrease number of 9th grade disciplinary referrals by teaching personal responsibility and developing positive relationships with faculty and staff. Improve 9th grade attendance by planning engaging, authentic, meaningful lessons and maintaining frequent parent contact.
