Henri Matisse Fauve Painter of France 1869-1954
Gift of art • When Henri was 22 he became ill with appendicitis – that left him bedridden for a year. • His mother gave him a set of oil paints….Henri was hooked. • “when I first started to paint , I felt transported into a kind of paradise…In everyday life I was usually bored by what people were always telling me what to do. Starting to paint I felt gloriously free, quiet and alone.”
Drawing with scissors • In 1941, at the age of 72 Henri became ill again. He could not stand for long, and he could barely hold a brush… • Did he quit or give up? • He began creating “cut-outs” • Cut paper on canvas…..
