  1. Broadcast or narrowcast? WHY DO YOU THINK THIS? The Right hand side is narrowcast, I say this because these channels shows only certain types of programs. Where as the left hand side, is broadcasting I know this because they broadcast near enough everything from the news, to comedy. Where as the right hand side shows things show only comedy, bloke shows, etc.

  2. Type of programmes – and some examples… What could you say about the shows on the channel? Shows bloke shows like Top Gear, Have I got news for you Live at the Apollo Shows comedy shows completely, such as Only fools and horses Shows a majority of crime related programs such as the protector Shows programs about food Broadcasts shows set in Britain, Such as programs as Oz and James drink to Britain Shows documentaries about historical events and shows comedies like Last of the Summer Wine and Open all Hours Eden shows nature Programs like life on earth by Sir David Attenborough

  3. Choose 3 channels – and define the target audience – using CARGEL – explaining WHY you think they are the target audience… Look at the programme listings to help you and think about the name of the channel < 1. 2. 3. Dave- The target audience is middle aged men. Because the programmes on that channel are lads programs such as: ‘Top Gear’, ‘Mock the week’, ‘Live at the Apollo’. Class Scale C-E Gold- The target audience is everyone in the household. As comedies from “some mother’s do have ‘em” to “Bottom”. Class scale C-E Home- The target Audience are young families. The class scale is B-D1, this channel falls under the Lifestyle category. This Channel is dedicated to Home improvements Your 3 Channel’s NARROWCAST to A NICHE audience – try to explain what this means Dave is narrowcasting as it focuses on male interests only Gold is narrowcasting as it focuses on comedy only Home is narrowcasting as it focuses on home improvements only

  4. Can you think of any other channels that narrowcast – to niche audiences What are the strengths and weaknesses of a ‘niche’ TV channel? Why do they show the same programmes day in day out? These channels show these programmes day in day out because that is what they are there to do. To serve a purpose as a genre channel to supply people with either a lads channel, comedy or a channel about how to improve your home. This is because this is what they are designed to show and nothing else The strengths are that no matter what happens, they will always have a target audiences. The weaknesses of ‘niche’ TV channel means that they can only broadcast shows from within that genre. BBC 3 is a narrowcasts to niche audiences through The hours that they broadcast and through what they broadcast to their minor audiences

  5. To conclude - explain how these channels (DAVE, GOLD etc) appeal to different ranges of audience than the films we have already looked at  - even though arguably they are all “mainstream”. How are they able to do this? (Cheaper, repeats, no production costs) The channels that belong to UKTV appeal to different ranges of audiences from Crime fanatics, lads, foodies, etc. They all broadcast what types of programmes people are after. Instead of films that wouldn’t contain documentary elements of how to make a cake. These channels can achieve this because none of the content is new and this means productions costs are non existent also. Some of you should attempt to comment critically - i.e. is a ‘niche’ TV channel a good idea? Why & why not? ‘Niche’ television is good and bad, good in the fact that there will always be have content and an target audience, however it is bad because, they will never pull in as many ratings as mainstream television, plus the target audience would get bored of repeats soon enough.

  6. THE CHANNELS SHOW THE SAME TYPE OF PROGRAMMES BECAUSE THEY ARE TRYING TO APPEAL TO A SMALL AUDIENCE THAT LIKES SPECIFIC PROGRAMMES – KNOWN AS A “NICHE” AUDIENCE. THEY ARE “NARROWCASTING” THE PROGRAMMES TO A NICHE AUDIENCE. DEFINITIONS: NICHE AUDIENCE When a TV show (or website or magazine or radio station) is aimed at a person’s individual interests - they are said to be a “niche” audience. It appeals to a niche or small or specialist audience. NARROWCAST To transmit programmes (especially by cable / satellite television) confined to the interests of a specific group of viewers, subscribers, or listeners, such as business people, or teenagers. This is the opposite to BROADCAST - e.g. Eastenders appeals to a wide audience (it has 80 year old and 16 year old characters, of different classes and different ethnic groups) of 8 million per episode - therefore it is “broad”cast. Appealing to a wide (broad) audience.
