WHY TOBACCO FREE • Student Government sponsored surveys in 2013 indicate that: • 60.2% of students favor a campus wide smoking ban • 65.23% of faculty and staff support a campus wide ban on smoking
WHY TOBACCO FREE • THE UNIVERSITY OF TOLEDO BOARD OF TRUSTEES - RESOLUTION NO. 14-04-08 • that the Board of Trustees of The University of Toledo has determined that its campuses and satellite locations shall be smoke-free and tobacco-free; that the prohibition shall apply to tobacco, smokeless tobacco, snuff/snus and electronic cigarettes; that the prohibition applies to the marketing and sale of tobacco products; that tobacco cessation programs shall be made available to students, faculty and staff; that University policies be revised to provide for a smoke-free and tobacco-free environment both in indoor and outdoor spaces; and • that the President is authorized to take any and all necessary steps to implement this resolution, the revised policies and enforcement of the policies
WHAT IS THE POLICY? • Tobacco product use is prohibited in all buildings, grounds, parking areas, and spaces • Except for expressly noted exceptions this policy applies consistently to all faculty, staff, students, visitors, patients and contractors of The University of Toledo: • (1) Main Campus • (2) Health Science Campus • (3) Scott Park Campus • (4) UTMC clinical satellite locations • (5) Center for the Visual Arts • (6) Lake Erie Center • 1. Stranahan Arboretum
WHAT IS THE POLICY? • Definitions- • Tobacco Products: All tobacco-derived obtaining products, including but not limited to cigarettes (clove, bidis, kreteks), electronic cigarettes or nicotine vaporizers, cigars, cigarillos, hookah smoked products, pipes, oral tobacco (e.g., spit and spitless, smokeless, chew, snuff) and nasal tobacco. It also includes any product intended to mimic tobacco products, contain tobacco flavoring or deliver nicotine other than for the purpose of cessation. • Tobacco-free policy exceptions • (a) This policy does not constrain approved academic research on tobacco conducted for an academic purpose in a controlled laboratory environment.
COMPLIANCE & ENFORCEMENT • Tobacco-free signs are posted throughout UT’S buildings and grounds • Compliance of the policy resides with everyone • Voluntary compliance will be sought by means of publicity, education programs, and the issuance of warnings, where appropriate
COMPLIANCE & ENFORCEMENT • If you see a person smoking on UT property: • Be polite and friendly • Assume that the person does not know about the policy • Explain that tobacco use is not permitted on UT property • If the person refuses to comply and becomes hostile, simply walk away and contact Campus Police
