Word Chunk. Students form groups of 3. Each group must come up with a name for the group in the TL and also a gesture representing the group. Teacher reads a sentence in the TL. The sentence could be from a recently read story or original sentences from current vocabulary.

Word Chunk • Students form groups of 3. Each group must come up with a name for the group in the TL and also a gesture representing the group. • Teacher reads a sentence in the TL. The sentence could be from a recently read story or original sentences from current vocabulary. • Students must raise their hands when they know how to translate the sentence into English.
Word Chunk cont’d • Teacher picks the 1st group with all hands raised 1st. • Teacher picks one random student from this group to translate the sentence. • Group members may correct a mistake, but not prompt the student translating. • If the student translates correctly, the group gets a point and the chance to shoot for bonus points.
Word Chunk cont’d • Each group member gets the chance to shoot a ball into a trashcan, crate, laundry basket…etc. 1 bonus point per basket.
Popcorn Reading (aka: Read Dating) • Each student has a copy of a recent story or reading that has been focused on in class. • Desks are put in rows. Teacher determines which rows of students will stay stationary and which rows of student will rotate. • Each student sits facing a partner. • Teacher puts a predetermined amount of time on a stopwatch. (1 min, 2 min…)
Popcorn Reading cont’d • One student reads a sentence in the TL and the partner translates it into English • They switch roles each sentence until the time is up. • When time is up, the row of students that rotates, rotates one place. • The same procedure starts until the reading is finished. • Students who finish early start from the beginning again until time is up.
