  1. Future Research Lines and Projects in Argentina Rubén Bottini

  2. What is being doing now (already shown in previous presentations) and, • What will be done in the near future 2007-2010

  3. Comparison between Australia and Argentina • Grape-wine chain businesses comparable • R+D investment not comparable • Sustainability of the chain comparable? Cause/effect relationship??

  4. SecytPreliminary Proposal (competitive grant) – Program for Strategic Areas (PAE) In clusters for production of goods and services: • To develop knowledge in issues of main concern, • To unravel priority problems, • To take advantage of emerging opportunities Duration of Projects: 4 years Maximum available per project: U$D 3 millions

  5. Construction of the Preliminary Proposalby confronting (inter-disciplinary): Necessities in Research and Development outlined in the PEVI 2020 (Strategic Plan for Viti-viniculture in Argentina) performed by COVIAR (Argentinean Viti-viniculture Corporation) Lines of research the cluster of scientists that work in the region may attend regarding: • Primary production • Industry • Health, energy and environment • Socio-economy

  6. Institutions (inter-institutional) • Centro Regional de Investigaciones Científicas y Tecnológicas (CRICyT-CONICET) • Corporación Vitivinícola Argentina • Instituto Nacional del Agua • Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Agropecuaria • Instituto Nacional de Tecnología Industrial • Instituto Nacional de Vitivinicultura • Universidad Nacional de Cuyo • Universidad Juan Agustín Maza • Universidad Nacional de San Juan

  7. Program for Argentine viti-viniculture Production and transmission of scientific knowledge in order to strength innovation, sustainability and competitiveness of the Argentine viti-viniculture

  8. Objective 1- R & D To strength the inter-institutional net of research and development that potencies the innovative and transference processes and promotes strategic alliances with other national and international research centers.

  9. Objective 2- R & D To produce, to validate and to transmit scientific and technical knowledge for innovating the grape (wine, must –grape juice-, table grape and dry grape) cluster in order to potency quality, yield and diversity, in a frame of sustainable production, allowing to reach the levels of competitiveness outlined in the PEVI.

  10. Objective 3 - Human an material resources • To consolidate a “critical mass” of scientists in the area, • To incorporate equipment to be shared among scientists, • To build-up an innovative center for grape and wine in Argentina.

  11. Research lines in primary production • Sustainable management of soil and water in viticulture. • Eco-physiological, genetic, biochemical and molecular studies of grape responses to abiotic (water stress, salinity, radiation -mainly UV/B-) and biotic (bacteria –PGPB- and fungi) factors. • Research and development of technologies for canopy management and crop mechanization. • Studies on the main plagues of grape and design of integrated control. • Development of standard parameters for grape quality and the optimal time for harvest. • Obtaining, characterization and evaluation of rootstocks and varieties of grapes for wine, table grape, dry grape and must.

  12. Research lines in agro-industry • Development of enological practices for differentiated and high quality wine. • Post-harvest technology for table grape.

  13. Research lines in health, energy and environment • Health security in the wine chain, contaminants; wine and health. • Improvement of the energetic and environmental efficiency in wine industry; the potential use of wine industry residues as active principles, biomass and fertilizers.

  14. Research lines in Socio-economy • Studies of preferences of wine consumers and adaptation of the Argentine wine style to the international market. • Strategic prospective of the Argentinean and world viticulture.

  15. To the Australian fellows Muchas Gracias!
