All About Me • My name is Corene Oberholtz. • Graduated from University of Redlands with a BA in Education and MA in Curriculum Leadership. • I have taught K-5th. What is Common Core? * A new set of standards to prepare children for the real world * Skills needed for career and college * Consistent from school to school, state, and country * Remodels our education program * Time to teach students, more in depth
Why Common Core? Collaboration: creates a foundation for your child to work collaboratively with their peers. Preparation: the standards will prepare your child for college and their career. Equality: the expectations are consistent for all students. Clarity: the standards are clear, consistent, and focused Applicable: the standards are relevant to the real world, reflecting knowledge and skills your child needs to be successful.

Common Core in First Grade Grading * Do you grade classwork?No, based on assessments only * Will my child have weekly tests?No, we’re doing common core so we’re going in-depth. We test when we’re finished with a unit, story, activity, skill, etc * Will all tests be pencil & paper tests? No, sometimes it could be a hands-on activity, computer test, or a group activity! * How will I know?Everything that is graded will be sent home in your child’s Friday folder. * What can I expect to see? Less multiple choice, more written constructed responses, detail explanations, and opinions.
Black Folder • * Please bring to school DAILY! • * Homework, Daily Behavior Reports, and important information will be sent home in these folders! • * You only get one a year. Keep it clean! • * Put lunch money in a ziploc baggie and put it in black folder • * This is a great way to keep up communication between parents and teacher • * I check this folder daily.
Homework • * Packet is sent home every MONDAY • * Homework is due on FRIDAY’s. • * Includes phonics page and math page • * Reading for 15 minutes nightly • * Homework starts next week! • * Please refer to the homework policy information in your packet.
Sight Words • * Be able to read them by sight. • * No sounding out • * Should be able to read the words in 2-3 seconds • * Be able to write each spelling word • * We will focus on a group of 8-10 words every 2 weeks • * Words will be listed on homework cover sheet • * Practice flashcards will be sent home • * Quick assessment every 2 weeks
Accelerated Reader A.R. • * incentive program to improve reading comprehension • * students read books at their level and take tests on the book at school • * students earn points for every test passed • * a reward every 6 weeks if goal is met • * should read at least 2 AR books a week • * you may have a parent account at our • school library and check out books • for your child. • * Will start 2nd trimester

Snack and Lunches • * Please provide your child with a nutritious snack during recess time. Recess is from 10:15-10:30 • * Lunch is from 11:30-12:10 • - Please send your child to school with a lunch or money every day. • - Label lunch pails, bags, and snacks with your child’s name • - Lunch is $2.50 • - You may prepay for lunches on EZ School Pay
Birthdays • * New school policy • * No treats due to health concerns • * No balloons, flowers, decorations, etc. • * Loss of instructional time • * Birthdays will be celebrated in class such as singing happy birthday, student can bring in something to share, etc.
Volunteers • * We LOVE Volunteers! • If you are interested in becoming a volunteer this year, please fill out the Helping Hands sheet in the back of your packet. Turn it in to me as soon as you can I will get back to you via email! • I will be contacting you for a volunteer meeting

Reminders * School starts at 8:15. Student must be lined up on C-6 by 8:10. Don’t be late! * Please fill out ALL emergency forms and send them back to school ASAP! * Black folders need to come to school everyday! * RED Reading Folders need to be brought to school on Friday’s as they are part of the weekly homework.
