  2. Evolution of the Program Standards and State Curriculum for School Libraries Statewide Feedback National Review Revision – Summer 2009 Feedback / Revision New National Standards (2008)

  3. 1.0 Mission The purpose of the school library media program is to provide all students and staff with equitable and timely access to ideas and information and to ensure, through an integrated instructional program, that students and staff are effective users of ideas and information. The school library media program has a published mission that is consistent with the educational mission of the school and the library media mission of the local school system and the state. The mission statement for the library media program is the foundation for planning, implementation, and evaluation.

  4. 2.0 Goals and Objectives The school library media program has written goals and objectives related to the school library media program mission statement.

  5. 3.0 Instruction The school library media center program is an instructional program that guides students to become independent learners. The library media specialist provides direct instruction to students and collaborates with teachers to provide authentic learning experiences that develop proficiency in information literacy, communication, and technology skills.

  6. 4.0 Staffing An effective school library media program requires certified library media specialists and adequate support staff with appropriate skills. The library media specialist is an essential partner in providing instruction and services that support the total educational program of the school.

  7. 5.0 Resources and Resource Services The school library media program is organized to provide flexible and equitable access to resources and resource services for students and staff.

  8. 6.0 Facilities A well-designed school library media center is conveniently located and barrier-free, providing library media services that promote and support student learning.

  9. 7.0 Program Evaluation Each local school system and school shall have a formally adopted comprehensive plan for evaluating all levels and aspects of school library media programs. This plan shall include both outcomes and assessment measures.

  10. Maryland School Library Media Curriculum - Grades PK-12 Standards – Topic - Indicators - Objectives 1.0 Define and Refine Problem or Question: Students will be able to follow an inquiry process to define a problem, formulate questions, and refine either or both to meet a personal and/or assigned information need. 2.0 Locate and Evaluate Resources and Sources: Students will be able to follow an inquiry process to identify, locate, evaluate, and select resources and sources in a wide variety of formats to meet the information need in an ethical manner. 3.0 Find, Generate, Record, and Organize Data/Information: Students will be able to follow an inquiry process to find, generate, record, and organize information relevant to the information need in an ethical manner. 4.0 Interpret Recorded Data/Information: Students will be able to follow an inquiry process to interpret recorded data/information to create new understandings and knowledge related to the information need in an ethical manner. 5.0 Share Findings/Conclusions: Students will be able to follow an inquiry process to share findings/conclusions in an appropriate format to support written, oral, and multimedia information products and evaluate the products and the processes in an ethical manner. 6.0 Appreciate Literature and Life-long Learning: Students will be able to demonstrate an appreciation of literature and multimedia as a reflection of human experience and use the inquiry process for life-long learning.
