Mental illness • So I decided to do my topic on this mental illness that is common • Schizophrenia is one of the most common metal illness that a person can get • It is said 1 out of 100 people are diagnosed with this illness
What is Schizophrenia • Schizophrenia is a brain disorder • It’s a psychiatric illness that causes strange thinking, strange feelings, and unusual behavior • And is most common in men • According to research it is hard to say a cause on how you develope it • But suggest a combination of brain changes, bio chemical, genetic and environmental factors • This is a life long disease that can not be cured but only controlled
Types of Schizophrenia • Paranoid:preoccupied with one or more delusions • Disorganized: rambling and disorganized behavior • Catatonic: abnormal movement, repeating what others say or do, excessive movement, strange postures • Undifferentiated: characterized by 2 or more symptoms • Residual: withdrawal and not speaking
Brain in schizophrenia This is some of areas of the brain that are effected by schizophrenia They operate abnormal Frontal lobe : problem solving and reasoning Limbic system: emotion Hippocampus: memory formation Occipital lobe: information about the visual world. Auditory system: hear and speech Basal ganglia: emotions and movement
Symptoms • Withdrawn and increased isolation • Severe anxiety and fearfulness • Extreme moodiness • Confused thinking • Confusing television and dreams from reality • Unusual or bizarre thoughts and ideas • Seeing things and hearing voices which are not real • Difficulty relating to peers and keeping friends • Ideas that people are out to get them or talking about them
Treatment • What psychiatrics' provide is an antipsychotic medication • Side effects include dizziness or sleepiness, weight gain and increased chance of diabetes • Besides medication patients with this illness usually have to do therapy as well as family therapy • What therapy does is help them adjust to the community • Schizophrenia takes a lifetime to treat and if a patient wants to be successful they would need therapy, medication, and support of family and people around them
