  3. These new government changes may provide a new and easier opportunity to work in Australia for prospective international students. Currently, the International Student Visa does not allow residency and the ability to work in Australia even after finishing an Australian degree. This significantly disadvantages students who want to work in Australia after finishing their degree. Introduction

  4. A change in student visa processes could allow applicants to use the higher education pathway to migrate to Australia and join the workforce. Currently, overseas students must meet the requirement of being a Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE). The GTE is a 300-word statement that describes the applicant’s personal circumstances surrounding the decision of an overseas education. However, in this statement, they cannot express any intention to gain a residency in Australia. In fact, their application is automatically denied if they mention wanting to migrate to Australia.

  5. However, with the Labour government’s push for immigration, the visa will be amended to consider high-skilled applicants who can contribute to Australia’s workforce. Especially, those who can contribute to the STEM and Allied Health fields. Further, flagged changes to the Student Visa Program include changing the GTE to a Genuine Student Test (GST). The specifics of the test have not yet been detailed, but it is expected to focus heavily on ensuring the applicants are genuine in their commitment to studying in Australia and are not using the student visa program for motives other than gaining quality education.

  6. By focusing on the genuineness of the students and their intentions, the GST ensures that only committed and high-skilled students are granted visas. This reform is aimed at allowing Australia to attract and retain talented international students, contributing to the diversity and enrichment of Australia’s educational institutions and workforce.
