The Caldervale Toolkit is designed to help students develop their reading skills for homework. It provides resources, tips, and strategies to improve reading abilities.

As you move through High School you will develop these skills and the toolkit is here to help you. 3 4 5 2 Homework Habit Caldervale Toolkit Where can you get things to read? • The school has an amazing librarywith an excellent librarian. The librarian can help you to choose the right book for you. Come in and talk to Mrs McDonald about what sort of things interest you, how confident you feel about reading, and she can help you choose the right book for you! • You will have a local librarywhere you will even be able to do Internet research if you book out one of their computers. Look in the house, go to a bookshop or newsagent ~ or even ask a friend!

Think about helping out people in your family if they need it, or think about teaching family members about what you have learned that day. 3 4 5 2 Homework Habit Reading Toolkit Books for All Books for all is a project from Learning and Teaching Scotland. The aim is to help all pupils gain access to printed texts and the written word. Some software packages on your Office packages on your computer will have things like text to speech reader software. Tips to get better at spelling. • Use these simple exercises to help improve your spelling. • Technique one. (this can be used for French too!) • When you come across new vocabulary in your subject use the space at the back of your homework diary to take a note of it and it’s meaning. • You can also write it in this jotter. • Follow these simple rules to learn the spelling of the new word. • Look ~ Look at the new word and try to see how it is spelled. • Say ~ Say the word out loud! • Cover ~ Cover up the word so you can not see it. Try to picture how it is spelled in your head. • Write ~ Write the word on the page under the correct spelling • Check ~ Now uncover the word and check your spelling against the correct spelling. • Repeat ~ repeat these steps for each word until you are sure you know it. Then get a family member or friend to test you.
Car Parking new words. • Car parking means when you come across an new word or new idea but don’t have time to check it out or learn it you can write it down quickly until you have time to do the look, cover, write, check, repeat tasks.
Word Bank. • A word bank is a place where you can put down words and meanings for each of your subjects. Make this list as neat as you can and take the words from your car park and notes and write them in neatly. Write the meanings in next to the word.
Using post-its • If you have a space at your desk at home, write down new or difficult words on post-it notes and stick them on your wall, at eye level, in front of you. • Use the words, which you have, in your word bank to help you decide which words to use. • This can be very useful when you are doing a long piece of writing to help you check spellings.
"Writing the word" • If you are in class and trying to remember how to spell a word try “writing it” with your finger on the desk OR try using your eyes to “write” the shapes of the words. • Try out these things and find things that work for you!

Recording your own voice • Use your mobile phone to record your own voice; • Say the word • Spell the word • Listen
Writing the word in fancy letters. • Take time to get familiar with new or difficult words. You can try; Bubble writing Cursive writing Italics
Study time ;0) • PASTE • Preview the text before reading • Always take notes on the main ideas • Save time by looking up unknown words • Try to highlight important information in your notes • Examine ideas for relationships • CRAM (effective for multiple choice) • Cover the answer • Read the question carefully • Answer the question without looking at the choices • Match your answer to one of the choices.

3 4 5 2 Homework Habit Numbers Toolkit As with reading and writing, different people have different strengths in different areas with numbers. Some people are stronger than others at using numbers, but we can all improve the level that we are at just now. All pupils will be expected to use numbers in many different subjects, not just in maths, so it is very important to understand how to work with them. The mathematics department have got very useful links through GLOW to the materials that they use with pupils. Check out the NUMERACY BOOKLET ~ it’s great!
3 4 5 2 Homework Habit Life Long Learning Learning is not confined to what happens in school or within the school curriculum. Employers, colleges and Universities want to know abouthow well you do academically and socially. The Archway project recognizes activities which pupils participate in for the benefit of their wider community, whether that be in activities in school such as Paired Reading or fundraising to community activities like Boys Brigade or Social Clubs. Through the Scottish Government “Saltire Awards” pupils can gain accreditation for bronze, silver or gold awards which recognize steps towards being responsible citizens who actively participate in helping others.

However if you are not planning on staying on at school and are involved with community projects/ volunteering and you think you may qualify for recognition of these achievements, please contact the Support for Learning department. 3 4 5 2 Homework Habit Transitions Nothing stays the same. Change is inevitable and there are supports in place at Caldervale to ensure that all pupils are supported through these changes. Working within the wider Pupil Support network the Support for Learning department liaises with primary schools to help the move from primary to secondary to be as smooth as possible. Caldervale has links to services which pupils can access for transitions with leaving the school, for example careers advisers. Pupils meet with Pupil Support teachers to discuss future plans, dreams and aspirations. Include parents, guardians and friends in these decisions too this can help with difficult decisions.
3 4 5 2 Homework Habit Challenge to Learn The Challenge course has developed in line with the Curriculum for Excellence. It has three main aims: • To support pupils to gain success in their learning and development in their academic subjects. • To develop pupils in their development of their whole self through the developing confidence, responsibility and the ability to contribute effectively for the demands of the modern world. 3. To develop the skills for life learning and work, as well as planning career paths for a positive future destination

Support may include adaptations to pupils with physical needs. It may be emotional support at times of bereavement or family crisis. 3 4 5 2 Homework Habit Study Skills As well as the effort and good work that pupils and teachers do in class to help learn it can also be good to get into good study habits. Remember it is better to study smart, not study hard. If you have homework, take time over it. Make sure your answers are full as these will become study notes for you for assessments. If you don’t have homework then take time to read over notes to help you understand what you are learning in class. There are some good websites that can help with study skills.
