Objectives • Understand the importance and characteristics of collaborative teaming • Identify team roles and responsibilities • Identify how to support team members • Articulate a vision that will guide your team’s mission statement
Benchmarks of Quality • #1 Team has broad representation • #2 Team has administrative • support • #3 Team has regular meetings (at least monthly) • #4 Team has established a clear • mission/purpose
School-Based ESD Team • Research indicates that effective teams score higher on the Benchmarks of Quality (BoQ). • ---Cohen, 2005 • Establishing a foundation for collaboration and operation is the first step in sustaining long-term change.
A School-Based ESD Team • Includes 5-8 participants • Considers representatives such as administrators, general education teachers, special education teachers, school counselors, bus drivers, parents…
A School-Based ESD Team • Includes team members with behavior expertise (e.g., school psychologists, behavior specialists/analysts, or counselors)
Administrators’ Rolesand Responsibilities • Administrators should play an active and visible role in the school-wide ESD change process. • Administrators should actively communicate their commitment to the process.
Administrators’ Rolesand Responsibilities • Administrators should be familiar with school’s current data and reporting system. • If administrators are not committed to the change process, it is unwise to move forward in the process.
ESD Team Roles • Facilitator • Encourager • Recorder • Timekeeper • Observer • Agenda Keeper
ESD Team Responsibilities • Develop the school-wide ESD action plan • Monitor behavior data • Hold regular team meetings (at least monthly) • Maintain communication with staff and coach • Evaluate progress and monitor fidelity of implementation • Report outcomes to Coach and Division Coordinator
Frequency of ESD Meetings • During initial planning, teams may need to meet more often (weekly) • Team should meet at least once a month to: • Analyze existing data • Make changes to the existing database • Problem-solve solutions to critical issues • Begin to outline actions for the development of a plan
Steps to Team Meeting Process(Beginning of Meeting) • Refer to Section 8 pages 5-9 • Assign roles • Assign times • Celebrate
List issues as questions on the notes form Prioritize Brainstorm solutions for each issue Reach consensus Recorder records “who, what, and when” as decisions are made Steps to Team Meeting Process(During the Meeting)

Team Process Evaluation • Self- Were you present and did you contribute? • Others-Were others present and did they contribute? • Coach/Leader-Was leadership shared too much, or too little? • Productivity- Were we productive; are we clear enough to move forward? • Use of time- Was time used well?

Team Mission Statement Example • The mission of our ESD team is to promote a culture that fosters prevention and mutual respect for faculty, staff and students.
Team Work Zone • Using the team meeting process: • Complete Product Book Cover Sheet • Review Readiness Packet to identify team meeting times/locations. If none, decide upon and record. • Develop team goal or mission: Why are you meeting as a team and what will keep you going throughout the school year? • Complete team roster
