Cancer in Childhood and Adolescence • 1% of all cancers in Canada are diagnosed in the age range 0-19 years • improvements in treatment have increased survival to almost 80% (over 80% in BC) • 1 in 988 survivors in 1997; prevalence will increase as the cohort increases and ages • majority of those diagnosed before age 20 may have long term sequelae of treatment and disease

Summary • There is a growing population in the community of survivors of childhood and adolescent cancer with increased risk of a number of long term health problems • There is much still not known about late health effects in this population • The extent of these problems is expected to grow as the survivor population ages and as treatments change
