Who was Charles Darwin? • Charles Darwin sailed around the world in the 1830’s looking at different plants and animals in many different places • Darwin knew that there was a huge number of species in the world and that many were extinct and wanted to know why. • Darwin also realized that plants and animals have traits and behaviors that enable them to survive and reproduce

What’s So Great About Darwin? • 30 years after starting his voyage Darwin published “The Origin of Species” • In his book Darwin argued that modern organisms had evolved from previously existing organisms • Darwin also believed that everything came from a common ancestor and called this principle common descent • Darwin believed that this process came from organisms adapting to their environments
