  2. What are the BIG purposes? For TA For MBUSI To provide a best practice language learning opportunity which will increase the likelihood that these students will seamlessly transition back into their school system. • To create a unique and value-added program. • To be a critical component of the business model that supports a Mercedes Benz plant in West Alabama.

  3. What is the Basic Structure? • K-12 German language component • Formal instruction in German given to any student who opts for the program • 30-60 minutes per day • K-12 curriculum component • Social Studies, history, geography • 30-60 minutes per day • Increased AP track science & math offerings

  4. Will it impact our current program? • YES… • Positively • In that we will further individualize our program thus creating more value-added for the students of TA • NO… • Negatively • In that everything that is currently available to our students will still be available.

How does this fit with our Mission? • The mission of Tuscaloosa Academy is to provide a college-preparatory education in a supportive environment of intellectual freedom, to cultivate a love of learning, and to maximize each student's potential for academic achievement, character development and readiness for life in a global environment.

  6. What does the research say? • THE OVERALL ACADEMIC BENEFITS OF LEARNING A SECOND LANGUAGE EXTEND INTO OTHER DOMAINS. • A POWERFUL INCUBATOR OF CULTURAL UNDERSTANDING WHICH LEADS TO ENHANCED “WORLD VIEWS” LATER IN LIFE.

  8. What will be the impact on enrollment? • About 100 students over the 5 years • Admissions procedures • “golden ticket”? • What is maximum enrollment? • Based on historical trend and analysis of space…

  9. Will this cost TA any money? • NO!!

  10. Can any student be in the ILCT program? • YES

  11. How would it be Governed? • Create a standing ILCT Committee composed of: • TA administration (Deans) • MBUSI HR representative • Teacher representative • Headmaster (Ex-officio) • President of MBUSI (Ex-Officio)

  12. What Resources would be Required? • Three full-time ILCT teachers for the Lower School/Middle School • One full-time German instructor for the Upper School • One full-time senior math/science teacher for the Upper School • One full-time ELL teacher • Curriculum materials associated with ILCT program Professional development funds, especially for establishing program • Ongoing operating costs associated with program • Classroom remodeling/upgrades

  13. SUMMARY • A powerful and unique school and community value-added program that fits with our Mission, is cost effective, is supported by research, is open to any student and will not compromise either our admissions process nor our enrollment objectives.
