  1. The Educator’s Professional Inventory The Game-Changing, Actionable Lessons Learned From Hiring for School Improvement

  2. Agenda • Brief Intro to Don • Video: Moneyball for teachers?!? • Basic Introduction to Research • Resume Roulette Activity • Going Deeper on the Research and Using it to Inform Hiring and Increase Student Achievement • Taking the Next Step

  3. Moneyball as an Analogy http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AiAHlZVgXjk

  4. Recent research has made it possible to create a tool that predicts the impact that a teacher candidate will have on student achievement.

  5. Teachers Are the Most Important Factor • Yet very little effort has been placed into making sure they are hired with scientific precision. • Can you predict teacher candidate performance? Yes! • EPI is the first and only comprehensive tool that predicts the impact that teachers will have on student achievement. And, because of advanced machine learning capabilities, it gets better and better the longer it is in use.

  6. Resume Roulette • Break into Small Groups • Review your stack of resumes and quickly identify 2 people to bring in for an interview. • Then, create a list with the top 3 criterion that the group agrees are the most important for making these decisions. • Select a speaker who will quickly share the 2 people and the criterion.

  9. Linking the Human Capital Chain

  10. Meta-Analysis of Hundreds of StudiesAn in-depth review of the literature yields four areas that matter most.

  11. Our Research Consortium

  12. TeacherMatch Nationwide ResearchSample deliberately varied by location, school type, size, and demographics.

  13. Automating Sophisticated Analytics EPI is truly an inter-disciplinary undertaking. We bring together specialists from multiple fields who normally do not dialogue. Hierarchical Linear Modeling: Indicates which items on the EPI are most predictive of student growth. Value-Add Modeling: Used as a Dependent Variable in our HLM model; our operational definition of “teacher effectiveness.” Technology Platform: Uses HLM and VAM results to deliver the EPI to assess candidates and report on their results.

  14. The System Learns Over Time The addition of SEM along with R on the technology side will enable a Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) that will allow for a real-time EPI that is context specific right down to the school and classroom level. Hierarchical Linear Modeling Sequential Equation Modeling Technology Platform Value-Add Modeling Adaptive EPI

  15. EPI Is Artificially Intelligent Research in Action

  16. Candidate Grid = Actionable & FastNow you can interview only the candidates most likely to be an effective teacher.

  17. Translating Score to Likelihood of Student GrowthValue-Add Modeling (VAM) removes factors that are not under the teacher’s control.

  18. VAM DistributionThink of this as a distribution of teachers’ ability to deliver student growth.

  19. Professional Development Profile (PDP)Uses evidence-based EPI results to customize a PD report.
