Explore-to examine, discover or inquire Explorer- someone who travels into little known regions (especially for some scientific purpose) Migration-movement from one place to another Settlement-colony: a body of people who settle far from home but maintain ties with their homeland, ruled by another country

  3. Viking – a sea-going people from Europe who are believed to be the first people to come to North America Contact- the first meetings between First Nations and the Europeans Conflict – to come into disagreement; to fight or do battle

  4. Trade-exchanging goods for other goods or money Voyageur- A trader, particularly in furs, who worked (and explored) in the area of Canada, French Canadian or Métis

  5. Missionary – a religious person who worked among the Aboriginal people to convert them to Christianity. • Converts – people who have changed their beliefs from one religion to another

  6. Sagas – epic stories told by the Vikings Skraeling– name given in the sagas for the Aboriginal people

  7. Expedition – people sent on a journey for a special purpose

  8. Navigation – calculating the position on a ship and steering it along the route Navigator – the person who navigates the ship, also called the pilot

  9. Heathens – what Europeans called people who did not believe in the Christian religion Converts – people who have changed their beliefs from one religion to another

  10. Scurvy – a disease caused by a lack of vitamin C in the diet

  11. Barter – to trade by exchanging one item for another Coureursde bois – a fur trader in New France
