CMAQ Helps Clear Bad Air CMAQ has contributed to a drop in person-days of bad air by 38% over the past decade Most (97%) of this reduction occurred in the state of California, which made excellent use of CMAQ funds relative to other states “[CMAQ can] improve our quality of life by reducing pollution, by relieving congestion, and by allowing us to walk or bike in a more pleasant environment” -FHWA Secretary Mary Peters

CMAQ Funds Inadequate New EPA standards for clean air are going into effect that will create new “non-attainment” areas Existing CMAQ funds will be inadequate to address the new non-attainment areas • Recommendations • Close the funding loophole that allows states to neglect the CMAQ program • Increase CMAQ funding to help states manage new non-attainment areas
