Semicolon • Semicolons help you connect closely related ideas. • You use a semicolon between two independent clauses. • Example: The dog is brown; it is also white • You can use a semicolon between independent clauses joined by a coordinating conjunction • Example: Some people enjoy texting to talk to people; but others like to talk over the phone.

  3. Examples • Now its your turn lets see if you know how to put a semicolon in a sentence. I WILL NEED TWO VOLUNTEERS!!!

  4. Rules for using Semicolons • Avoid using a semicolon when a comma is needed. • Use a semicolon between items in a list. • Semicolons are used to join two or more ideas in a sentence.

  5. Colons • What is a colon?

  6. A colon is used after a statement that introduces a quotation, an explanation, an example, or a series. • You will often use a colon to separate a independent clause.

  7. Lets see what you know so far!

  8. Hyphens • Use a hyphen with compound adjectives. • Example: The black-and- blue mark showed all of the grammar problems he missed. • DO NOT use a hyphen before an adverb. • DO NOT use a hyphen when a compound modifier appears after the noun • ANYONE THAT I PICK COMES UP TO THE BOARD AND WRITES A SENTENCE USING A HYPHEN!!

  9. Dashes • There are two types of dashes the em dash and the en dash.

  10. En dash • The en dash is used for periods of time • Example: The years 2001-2003 • Example: June-November

  11. Em dash • Em dashes may replace commas, semicolons, colons, and parentheses to add interruptions. • Example: You are the friend-the only friend-who offered to help me.
