  2. What is a semi colon ? A semicolon (;) is a form of punctuation that marks a break in a sentence; It is stronger than a comma but not as strong as a period.

  3. When do you use a semicolon? • Use a semicolon to join the parts of a compound sentences if no coordinating conjunction is used . Example: The first recorded Olympics took place in 776 B. C. in Olympia , Greece; only one athletic event was held that year--a footrace of about 193 meters (210).

  4. Use a semicolon before a conjunctive adverb that joins the clauses of a compound sentence. Conjunctive adverbs include therefore,however,otherwise,consequently, moreover. These usually function as introductory words and need to be followed by commas. Example: The first 17 ancient Olympics featured only footraces and ended in one day; however, the program changed in the 18th Olympics , when wrestling and the pentathlon were added.

  5. When commas occur within parts of a series , use semicolons to separate the parts. Example: The first modern Olympics were held in Athens , Greece; the second in Paris, France; and the third in St. Louis, Missouri.

  6. Insert semicolons where needed in the following sentences. • One side was willing to negotiate however, the other side refused. • Lenise was born in Ames , Iowa Jack in Waco , Texas and Stella ion Cancun , Mexico. • Adjust the dial carefully the mechanism is sensitive. • Kiki brushed her hair then , she tied it back with a blue ribbon. • I was disappointed in the play in other words , it was terrible.

  8. What is a Colon? • A colon(:) is a form of punctuation that indicates a list, a quotation, or some form of explanation follows.

  9. When Do You Use a Colon? • Use a colon to introduce a list of items. • Colons often follow words like these or thefollowing Example: The pentathlon included the following events: discus throw, long jump, javelin throw, running and wrestling.

  10. Use a colon between two independent clauses when the second explains or summarizes the first. Example: Before the games the athletes had to affirm their eligibility to compete: they swore a solemn oath to Zeus.

  11. Use a colon to introduce a long formal quotation. Example: Before the athlete were allowed to begin their two day march to Olympia , the judges gave a few words of caution: “Ifyou have practices had for Olympia and if you have not been lazy or done anything dishonorable, then go forward with confidence. But if you have trained yourselves this way , then leave us and go where you choose.”
