In what ways were the fluctuating tensions of the Cold War reflected in the space race? Jose IBH2 European History November 16, 2010
Thesis Statement The fluctuating tensions of the Cold War were reflected in the space race as specific periods with differing amounts of tension during the Cold War and its reasons for tension often coincided with whatever was happening in the Space Race, and this is seen in the comparison in the Cold War periods of Brinkmanship, Détente, and Cold War 2.
Brinkmanship Space Race Cold War 1957: ICBMs, Sputnik, Laika (USSR) 1959: Reconnaissance Satellite (US), probe to Moon (USSR) 1961: First man in space (USSR, then US) 1963: First woman in space (USSR) 1953-1957: Peaceful Coexistence 1959: Cuban Revolution 1960: U2 spy plane shot down 1961: Bay of Pigs 1962: Cuban Missile Crisis 1964: Gulf of Tonkin incident
Detente Space Race Cold War 1969: Man in moon (US) 1975: Apollo-Soyuz Mission (USSR/US) 1969: Nixon as president 1970: Nuclear non-proliferation treaty 1972: Nixon visits China, SALT 1973: Paris Peace Accords 1975: Helsinki Accords
Second Cold War Space Race Cold War 1983: Strategic defence initiative (US) 1980: Boycotting of Moscow Olympics 1981: Reagan as president, Iran hostage crisis 1983: Korean airline shot down 1984: Boycott of LA Olympics
Conclusion The periods of increased tension, Brinkmanship and the second Cold War, was often partnered with a myriad of aggressive Space Race advancements which forced its counterpart to equal or even better the achievement. The periods of decreased tension, détente, also followed this trend as the period of decreasing tension led to actions which can be considered as conciliatory and peaceful such as the Apollo-Soyuz mission.
