  3. Reusing Household Trash • Duration: 3 weeks • Grade/Age Level: 2 - 6 • Facilitator (s):

Project Idea Goals: • Explain to students that they can help to save the environment by reusing recyclable household trash • Students use critical thinking, investigative, technology, and collaborative skills to gain first-hand knowledge of the recycling process through group research • Students explore, observe, and use creative skills to translate the idea of reusing household trash into tangible, usable craft items

  5. Challenge Tasks students will complete to answer the guiding question: • Share prior knowledge about recycling in brainstorming session • Keep daily log of amounts and types of their household trash • Collect and bring recyclable household trash to after school program

Challenge • Conduct Internet research to explore different ways to reuse recyclable household trash • Participate in final product “Trash to Treasure” by working cooperatively with team members to create and design usable items from recyclable household trash • Cooperatively select presentation format from given list

  7. Investigation • Observe and record amounts and types of household trash that accumulates (within their homes) over a given time period • Through process of discover learning, explore ways to reuse recyclable household trash

  8. Scenario/Problem • Finding creative ways to change students’ personal behaviors that affect the environment • Finding creative ways to promote ongoing awareness of the need to protect the environment

  10. Project Content • Introduction to the concepts of recycling, reusing, and reducing using the guiding question a). Definition: recycling, reusing, and reducing b). Reasons for recycling c). How reusing household trash helps environment d). Ways to reuse recyclable household trash

Project Content • Content area skills in science, math, reading, listening, speaking, and writing based on PSSA standards (www.pacode.com/secure/data/022/chapter4/chap4toc.html) • Incorporation of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) National Educational Technology Standards for Students http://www.iste.org/Content/NavigationMenu/NETS/ForStudents/2007Standards/NETS_for_Students_2007.htm
