武士道 – Bushido – the way of the warrior Code of Conduct that focused on honesty, bravery, and intense loyalty to their leader. The word saburai means servant which would later change to Samurai or “those who serve.” Samurai were thought of as fearless and would rather kill themselves than lose honor by not following the way of the warrior. (kamikaze in WWII)
If samurais failed to follow bushido, they performed seppuku, or ritual suicide.
Samurais were more than warriors. They were educated in art, writing, literature and could also be devout Buddhists. (Why is this a contradiction of values?)
Even though emperors continued to rule, shoguns (commander-in-chief), were more powerful.
Wearing a sword was a privilege and right of a samurai. Swords were passed down to families or given as prizes to loyal warriors.
