  2. Origin • The samurai were skilled warriors that developed in japan after the reforms of 646 CE • The reforms including increase in taxes and land redistribution to support the elaborate empire • This system did not last long, but while it did the feudal lords needed warriors to defend their riches • These warriors became known as samurai.

  3. History • The samurai originated in 646 A.D after the Taika reforms • These reforms raised taxes, evicted farmers, • Many farmers had to become tenant farmers working for a lord • These lords needed warriors to protect their riches, so they hired the Samurai or “Bushi”

  4. Philosophy • The philosophies of Buddhism and Zen were the largest philosophies influencing samurai during their rise and fall • The Zen philosophy allowed the samurai to have the ability to clear their mind through meditation • Many samurai who followed the Buddhist customs, believed in reincarnation and rebirth which made many samurai realized all of their killing was pointless and many samurai became Buddhist monks

Seppuku 切腹 • The term Seppuku means ritual suicide or Hari-Kari • The samurai strongly believed in honour and honourable deaths, and Seppuku was thought to be the most honourable way to die besides death in battle • Some samurai would even commit this in the middle of a battle so as not to be captured and die dishonourably

Weapons • The early samurai were archers that used bows called yumi • They later changed to use daisho which meant long-short and were two blades one long and one short: a Katana (over 2 feet long) and a wakizashi (just under 2 feet long) • In the late 16th century non samurai were forbidden to wear the daisho

  7. Armor Lamellar armor is made by binding together metal scales into a small plate. These small, light plates are fastened together with cords of leather, each plate slightly overlapping the other. Originally, there were two basic types of lamellar armor. Yoroi that was worn by mounted samurai, this heavy armor included heavy helmets and shoulder guards, and Do-Maru that was worn by foot soldiers, this armor was tighter and lighter. The helmet ornaments we know today grew into beautiful works of art during peaceful periods of time.

  8. Downfall The main downfall of the samurai was when Emperor Meiji got rid of the samurai's right to be the only armed force to improve the army in 1873. Samurai became Shizoku who retained some of their pay, but the right to wear a katana in public was eventually removed along with the right to kill people who disrespect them. The samurai finally came to an end after hundreds of years of enjoyment of their status, their powers, and their ability to shape the government of Japan
